New Science Building at Portsmouth Abbey School

The prestigious academic institution Portsmouth Abbey School is preparing to expand its 525-acre campus with the addition of a new science education facility. This exciting project is the latest enhancement to the school’s world-class facilities, which has a total enrollment of 360 students from 23 countries.

The new science building will be constructed from the ground-up in the heart of the Portsmouth campus to feature 34,000 square feet of diverse educational spaces. It has been designed by Boston-based architectural firm Architerra to house teaching laboratories, classrooms, assembly areas and shops, office space, and a multi-story commons. The structure will ultimately be tied into the adjacent Burden Classroom Building.

We are extremely excited to announce that A/Z has been selected to serve as the Abbey’s Construction Manager for this project. The A/Z team is prepared to leverage our extensive academic research experience with other leading institutions such as Brown University, Yale University, and Wesleyan University. Additionally, A/Z is a preferred partner to many of the region’s most recognizable science and technology companies.

The new science building is a wood and steel-framed structure that will make use of glulam beams—the sustainable and aesthetically striking components made from laminated timber. A/Z’s recent completion of the Thompson Exhibit Building at Mystic Seaport provides a great example of the beauty and flexibility of this material.
